An elderly driver apparently lost control while reversing a car and ran over a number of people in Dubbo NSW.
The report in the paper didn't give an age of the driver but a TV item later said she was 85.
I'm not saying she was at fault in this case, but how many times do similar things happen.
Elderly people "Loosing contol" and driving through a parking station wall, to land upside down on the street, or the elderly person who drove down the steps of the Bondi Junction Railway entrance "by mistake", another at St James Station a few years ago.
Young drivers get blame for a a big share of bad driving but older drivers, past their prime, can do as much damage.
One of the reasons for "Flashing lights" at School zones is for older people who have trouble with time, but drivers that aren't competent,(of any age), should not be behind the wheel.
This article was in the Sunday Telegraph (16 April)

I e-mailed a letter and it was printed in the Sunday Telegraph yesterday.

I am amazed that nobody in the media (that I know of)commented on the fact that he, of all people, was caught speeding.
It just seemed so incongruous to have a man who deals with road carnage everyday and sees the photos of the aftermath of speeding, and he is caught speeding, through a school zone of all places.
I'm certain that it was just a case of him not seeing the school zone signs or didn't realize what time it was.
It's easy to do on an empty road, if it was at say 3.50 pm, when all the kids are home or at 8.10 am when the school kids are still at home having Coco pops
I'm not having a go at him, because obviously he wasn't aware it was school zone time,it just shows that anyone can unaware of when it's School Zone time.

In the other main Sunday paper the same day was this letter.

Mr Oldfield should tell his wife that if one of her "Flaky friends" drive her car, then they should obey the speed limit.
Speeding is dangerous.
The person to whom the car is registered to, should be made to take responsibility, as in the case of passengers wearing seat belts.
If she can't trust anyone else who drives the car, not to break the law, because she the registered owner will be held resonsible, DON'T LET THEM DRIVE.
There's too much of the "I don't recall." cop out.

This is a photo of the Road minister Eric Roozendal's vehicle overtaking cars illegally (alleged)in a Bus lane in Bondi.
Although a biggish 4 wheel drive it doesn't quite qualify as a bus.
The minister admits that although he didn't notice his drivers error, because he was reading cabinet papers at the time, he will pay any fine and donate the same amount to charity.
At least the minister didn't say "I don't recall"
I trust that the Sunday Telegraph photographer was in a bus when he took the picture.
I sent in this e-mail (I thought)

The e-mail came back undelivered, because I'd addressed it incorrectly.

When this was reported in the Telegraph on Sunday 16/06 I sent an e-mail to the editor, and it should, if it passes muster be in tomorrow's Daily Telegraph.
Driving in a bus lane is one thing, but at least 30kmh over the speed limit in a school zone?
What was he thinking, or was he unaware?
The Lurgano man was on radio talkback again on Friday and is going to do what I had planned a year and a half ago.
Put up a set of his own flashing lights onto a school zone sign to see what happens.
Obviously the RTA might have a problem with this, but with right media coverage this exercise should highlight the fact, that he can supply and fit these lights that can do the job for under $200,when the RTA is talking $24,00 per set.
Because the then, Roads Minister Mr Scully said that it was "inconclusive" that flashing lights would work,I was going to monitor the Gymea school zone camera and count the flashes, with and then without the lights, to see if drivers reacted.
Sadly , even though to use my own flashing lights at a school zone would have put the cat among the pigeons, I reluctantly shelved that idea, and went with School Zone Santa instead.

Four months and 21 pages of how drivers have been treated by the RTA, lawyers, ministers, courts, or how they have been ignored after being fined at the Beverly Hills speed camera trap.
