The RTA made a big mistake to take down lights that were slowing traffic at school zones put up by Peter with the eyes and cameras of the media watching.

On Monday Channel Nine were there.

On Tues afternoon when they came to stop this illegal operation the Telegraph and the Leader were there to record the event.

Here is a man who has through his famous Christmas light show seen by hundreds of thousands of people and raised $380,000 for a children charity trying to make it safer for children around schools.

The RTA should have thought it through a little more carefully especially with Alan Jones and the other 2GB presenters on the side of Peter and common sense

I wrote on the 30 March, 11 April and the 19th of May about Peter of Lurgano who has made up sets of simple orange flashing lights.

These lights are great and he did a very professional job at a fraction of the cost of the RTA's Super dooper ones.

Last weekend he put them on the school zone signs at four schools.

Monday morning at 8 am they came on to warn drivers that it was school zone time, even though it was a "pupil free day".

I heard about it on 2GB and went to have a look.

I parked approaching a sign with the lights flashing away and watched as cars passed me and the ones that weren't already at 40 kmh braked when they saw the lights, evident by the fact that their brake lights came on.

Not long after 3 pm the RTA arrived in 4 trucks and took the lights down.

I overheard the reason was, that they "defaced" the sign and the wiring wasn't to Aus. standards.

Tuesday morning Peter put up a set of lights watched by Radio and 2 TV teams.

Tues PM The Telegraph, The Leader, Channel 10 and 7 were there.

At 3.45pm the RTA arrived and Peter was told that it was an illegal operation and to take them down.

As the lights were now not on an RTA sign, and therefore nothing to do with the RTA he declined, and an RTA gentleman took them down anyway.

Mr Sugden is right on the money.

Put flashing lights at school zones to advise good drivers,(who will slow down) that it's school zone time and punish those that refuse.

Tha State government has promised flashing lights at the end of the year.

What's going to happen ?

Well they'll "roll out" a few expensive flashing lights to appear to be doing something, as there is an election coming up, and continue to punish unaware good drivers.

and if the RTA goes with the overengineered option and the Liberals get in, it could result in a "circumstances have changed, and it's Labors fault anyway." reason for the whole project being delayed, while they have an inquiry into the whole matter.

If there is a need to raise a bit of easy money, target the illegal use of mobil phones in cars.

Put more unmarked highway patrol cars on, and catch the real bad drivers.
