Unless something dramatic happens at a school zone like some poor kid getting run over or a speed camera is BBQ'ued British style I'm afraid the media isn't interested, see:
http://www.speedcam.co.uk/gatso2a.htm
I emailed the two biggest talk back radio people in the last two weeks and didn't get a reply.
I know the 2GB chap is very busy, but I would've liked a reply at least and the "NOT GUILTY" Lawyers I asked for help,( the whole sorry saga further down the page) advertise quite heavily on 2UE which might be a reason for no reply there.
With all the stories with P platers causing havoc on the roads, there's no sympathy for good drivers caught unawares.
Not that I condone the action of the vandals in England, but if you do see a speed camera bonfire email me a picture and "in the public interest" I will publish it.
It appears that the RTA want to put Rego plate recognition technology into all speed and red light cameras "to track criminals"
These criminals, are they all the drivers who ran out of points because of multiple fines at places like Beverly Hills and now drive without a licence because they have no choice, because of inefficient public transport.
Some people actually need a car to get to work so they can pay a mortgage and feed their kids.
I have an idea who the real criminals are.

This smashed speed camera sign at Fredrck St Beverly Hills has be replaced
I could see years ago (as most people with common sense can), that school zones weren't working as they should and tried to highlight that fact.
I could see in July by standing there at Beverly Hills and observing the traffic flow, that once the new speed cameras were switched on there would be heartache, and there was.
I emailed the roads minister suggesting what I thought could help both the drivers and improve the safety of the children there, which I think is the whole point of slowing cars down, and was ignored.
I could've just said, well that's it, that didn't work, I've done my bit and I'll now take up stamp collecting but no I'll continue.
Questions I would like to ask Mr Roozedaal.
Why it takes 35 days for the RTA to process a fine?
(this is not an isolated case, I have emails)
Why do school zone cameras have to be 24 hour, where are the school children at 3.00am?
Why a warning can't be sent instead of a fine to a retired school teacher a person with a 37 year clean licence a fine for doing 51 one day and 53 the next, in an area she thought was 60km/ph?
Why are there extra school zone flashing lights to cover one cross st going North on King Georges rd Beverly Hills, but not one for four streets entering the school zone heading South?
This zone it 1.1 k/mh long a school at either end and is a divided three lane major rd, why is it ALL a school zone?
After watching traffic even before the speed cameras were turned on I could see extra flashing lights would be of great benifit to drivers and pedestrians and asked Mr Roozendaal if he could help in 5 emails to no avail.
Where is Police discrestion?
An emailer driving his wife's car was stopped at a registration check point and fined $400 because the rego had expired 8 (eight) hours earlier and then was allowed to drive home and was told if he was stopped again to say he was on his way to get the car registered.
He has had numerous venhicles and never had rego problems.
NO... but the standing on the roadside waving signs and signs on my van sadly because of family reasons will be no more.
My idea written about earlier about staging a 24/7 protest at Beverly Hills with my van showing the "SPEED CAMERA 100M" sign and me inside, to draw people's attention to the fact that nothing has improved for drivers or pedestrian safety there, has to be abandoned.

I'm sorry that it has come to this as every day there will be more good average drivers unfairly punished by the ham fisted approach "in the interest of public safety" taken by the RTA and the unsympathetic attitude of the roads minister.
As I have said many times unless I have the media's help or money to buy it there's not much more I can do.
I would love a chance to ask Mr Roozendaal a few questions myself.
The figures on the number of drivers caught over the last few weeks would be huge with the all the holiday makers driving past unaware of the speed limit because of the inadequate signage at Beverly Hills.
If you read back over the last couple of pages, I give a bit of an idea of the problem at Beverly Hills and that nothing has been done to make it fairer and safer for all.
I did email the roads minister Mr Roozendaal again on the 4/1/08 at 12.14pm and told him of my (now cancelled) intentions in the new school year but I have had no reply from his office.

A recap of events at the Beverly Hills variable speed zone.
July 07
I noticed that the RTA were installing fixed speed cameras at Beverly Hills and on 25 July wrote on this website that there was going to be drama when they were switched on because of the road conditions there.

The premier Mr Iemma made this speech at the swearing in of the new police commissoner.

I could see no "justice in policing" happening at Beverly Hills.
I tried to get media attention with the "SPEED CAMAERA 100M"
sign and others to no avail, school zones and speed cameras are old news, who cares about the injustice at Beverly Hills?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
A "class action" was set up by enterprising lawyers.
" Between 200 and 300 drivers are contacting the lawyers a day re the class action after getting tickets in the mail from Beverly Hills."

I had a little trouble working out the explaination above, as the entry form to get on the "list" clearly states.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
"If you wish to be part of the group that are making representations to the minister (referred to in ltr attached) we will require an amount of $110.00 to be deposited into our trust account. Details are as follows:
Bank: Westpac. Account Name: Nyman Gibson Stewart
BSB: 032 006 AC No. 218 939"
"In the event that you retain this firm for the representations to the Minister and the fine is not waived, and you instruct us to act on your behalf in Local Court proceedings to plead guilty, the fee for such a plea will be reduced to $600 exclusive of GST. If you do not retain this firm to act on your behalf for representations to the Minister but you later instruct us to act on a plea of guilty in the Local Court for a speeding offence, our fee will be $750 exclusive of GST."
"To ensure your inclusion, the initial non-refundable payment of $110 should be paid into our Trust account as soon as possible."
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
The newspaper clipping above was early on in the piece, when I spoke to Mr Miralis in Sept he said the figure was over 4000, so I read 4000 x $110 and an unknow number at the extra $650.(or $750 exclusive of GST)
I had an idea to help the lawyers with their claim in the "class action" entry form:
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
"We have raised these issues with the media who have highlighted the unfairness of your situation and will continue to escalate the publicity."
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx 4/10/0
Dear Mr......
I spoke to you on 2 Oct concerning the school zone at Beverly Hills.
As you know as School Zone Santa I have been emphasizing the need for repeater flashing lights at Egbaston St.
I have e-mailed the Roads Minister Mr Roozendaal about this matter 3 times with no reply forthcoming
The e-mails and his non reply are on my web site www.schoolzonesanta.com
(one page back under heading “No hope for some people”)
The letter sent to me from your office states in part,
“We have raised these issues with the media, who have highlighted the unfairness of your situation, and will continue to escalate the publicity”
I have a request that could “escalate the publicity”, be of benefit with your class action, and help my efforts to get a bit of common sense into the situation at Beverly Hills.
When school goes back after the break I will be back at the school zone, but to really make a difference, I need a bit of help.
As Mr. Roozendaal won’t answer my e-mails privately, I would like with financial assistance from your company, to place a paid open letter to him in newspapers stating my concerns re the Beverly Hills School Zone, and the resulting publicity should bring this mess back in the public eye, adding more pressure on Mr. Roozendaal to use a bit of ministerial discretion.
And an open letter in the leader should get more local drivers who have been caught, and are still being caught to contact you through a link on my web site. A second letter in the Daily Telegraph would attract drivers who live outside the area.
I would imagine that this could be written off as advertising costs.
I would request you give this idea urgent consideration as I would like to have the letters drafted and published on the 16/10/07 Thank you
Yours faithfully ]
Hans Stephens
PS. Unless something is done, it can only get worse for drivers at Beverly Hills when the RTA take away the trailer mounted computer signs that now warn drivers of the 24 hour speed cameras.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
I received this email back, but as you can see no mention of my idea of the open letter or finacial help.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Distressd drivers continued to email me about Beverly Hills
......................................................................
Hi...
I was fined on the 10th October travelling at 61km/h on what I thought to be a 60km zone. I exited toranga terrace & drove onto Stoney Creek rd to drive to Botany to avoid the M5. I'm now in danger of losing my licence...
I'm writing to the RTA today but any help or advice would be appreciated!
Thanks for yout time, regards
.........................................................................
Hi Mr Stephens,
I met you about a month ago on King Georges Rd while you were dressed
as Santa making the public aware. I was the electrician doing some
work in the florist on the corner. I have been given the run around
by the government departments and need your advice on the following:
1. I got booked on 23rd July by the new speed camera on King Georges
Rd at 2.34pm doing under 15km/hr going northbound and the fine
still has not been cancelled.
2. I had to pay the fine due to the time frame given by the SDRO even
though I had sent dispute letters to the RTA and State Debt Recovery
Office.
3. I mentioned in my letters that there were no signs posted as I
entered King Georges Rd from a side street.
4. My second fine from the same camera was on the 30th August at 3.52pm 1
15km/hr under and also northbound.
5. The third and final one was on the 12th September at 3.49pm at
15km/hr under northbound.
All I am Asking for you is your opinion on how I can beat these fines
and my best way about it.
Kind regards,
.........................................................................
Hi,
Can you help me with a typical letter please?
I was fines on 14th Aug doing 51km/hr (thought it was 60km/hr zone because there were NO 40km/hr SIGNS) and I really need to get this overturned.
Can YOU HELP ME PLEASE
------------------------------------------------------------------------
These are just three of the many I have.
If you know you are speeding and get caught OK, but people have lost their licence without knowing.
Is that justice?
So after the Lawyers asked me for copies of photos off the website which I sent straight away (for free), I tried again.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxHi Dennis,
About "ACA" I know exactly what you mean, they take all this footage and then some pony tailed editor puts on air his slant.
But as I've said there isn't too much sympathy by most people, for those caught by speed cameras unless they've been caught themselves.
As for the media, they aren't interested unless there's a different or unusual angle.
I want to put posters that are the same as regulation size RTA 60 signs on every lamp post on the whole length of the Beverly Hills 60 zone (both sides) up high enough that a ladder is needed to take them down, to emphasize the patent lack of real RTA ones
I've thought of using the back of election posters that still festoon poles but that could be a little dangerous taking them down.
I know I've asked before but it would help, if you know someone or some business who could perhaps pay for the flute poster board I would need.
As I think the erecting of these posters might not be entirely legal, discression is assured if you can help.
Mrs school zone santa is not as keen as I about my Beverly hill activities so I can't justify using any more of my/her money
It's for a good cause Dennis, Mr Roozendaal has to be embarrassed into doing something.
Regards Hans
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
No help was forthcoming so, as School zone santa.com is definitely a non profit one man band, I went to a plan B, to collect something I could use, and help clean up the environment at the same time.
The fact that the election posters are still there, could be a story in itself.

I have still and video footage of me climbing the ladder and removing the posters on this side of the pole, kindly taken by a lady off to catch a train to work.
BUT I HAVE NO FOOTAGE OF ME FALLING OFF THE LADDER GETTING A POSTER DOWN FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE SAME POLE.
AFTER I'M FINISHED WRITING THIS I'LL WAKE MY WIFE AND CRAWL TO THE CAR AND GO TO THE CARINGBAH MEDICAL CENTRE TO SEE WHY I CAN'T WALK ON MY RIGHT LEG.
........................................................................
Xmas day
.
After I had surgery at Sutherland Hospital to reassemble a smashed heel bone.

and this means I'm on crutches for three months, which is a bit difficult being self employed.
This would never had happened if there had been a bit of commen sense shown at Beverly Hills, after the RTA must've realized that there was a problem with the thousands of drivers being booked in such a short time.
I predicted trouble on 25 July on this web site and after giving the highly paid brains at the RTA time to also notice the problem, I emailed the Roads Minister Mr Eric Roozendaal.
All that was needed was one phone call from him to get a flashing light unit installed at Egdbaston st, he is the Transport Minister after all.
This is the first of 4 emails I sent in September and were unanswered.

Subject: school zone
Dear Minister,
I would like to bring to your attention a situation at a school zone on King Georges rd. Beverly hills.
There are flashing lights at this zone and now also a new set of speed cameras, but a lot of drivers don't realize that the whole shopping strip is a school zone.
Because it's such a long zone, (1,1 klm) can a second warning light unit be added to the school zone sign that's half way, heading South towards Hurstville, similar to the one already on the other side of the road.
Without going on in detail here, my concern about this school zone is explained, with photos, on my web site www.schoolzonesanta.com
Thank you for your time

This is the page on the day I sent the E-mail.
................................................
What is needed at King Georges and Edgbaston Beverly Hills is get one of these flashing light units

and put it where this school zone sign is on the right

and I would say that would help with the school zone "speeding" for drivers heading south.
Drivers now just cruise down this divided road after traffic lights change at Morgan st forgetting all about the school zone.
There needs to be more 60 signs (because it's 70 both sides of the Beverly Hill shops) and if a larger school zone sign with Flashing lights had been installed at Edgbaston steet, I don't think the RTA and ultimatly, Mr Roozendaal would have this problem.
This item was sent to me

So because he "welcomes" letters but doesn't bother to answer them, I thought it might be an idea to ask why, say in a paid OPEN LETTER to him in a major newspaper.
I would ask him why, what I think is a reasonable suggestion to help motorists at Beverly Hills, is ignored.
An open letter to a minister by an ordinary citizen is a reasonably unusual thing to, and might generate a column inch or two and extract a response.
But to put an open letter in the paper costs money.
I couldn't get any help to fund a paid open letter, so later after an opportune news report, I tried the letters page and presto
THIS WAS IN THE LETTERS PAGE NOV 8
............

I got a letter (Aust. Post) from the ministers office two working days later, so publicity does work.
The letter is shown in full further back in the site, and says that
my "interest has been noted"
I have had numerous letters printed in newspapers, there's one on the page below about the police car story,. never once has a reporter rung to ask why I'm doing this.
Am I bitter about something?
Have I got a vendetta against the RTA?
No I have all my 12 points and know there has to be road rules but average drivers have to be treated with respect, and not treated like halfwits who have to be cowed into submission.
Like the way drivers are forced to use the Lane Cove tunnel by leaving only one lane on Epping road for cars and now half a dozen cyclists have a lane to themselves.
There's respect for tax ,car registration, licence, greenslip etc. paying motorists.
I wonder why the Iemma Government paid the toll company millions to put off the closing of the lanes till after the last state election.
You'll see the mess in Lane Cove next week when schools are back and everyone (except me) is back at work.
What would happen if drivers on mass just drove through the tunnel without e-tags and when they received fines elected to go to court.
The courts would be clogged up for years.
That may be civil disobedience but it would send a message not to treat ordinary people like ninnys.

The last clipping was a letter I found earlier
As I have long stated the need for unmarked police cars to catch the real idiots, I emailed this into the Telegraph and it was printed this morning.

The word "bleeding" was left out in front of my "obvious" and I said "24" hr speed cameras but the main message is there, thank you Telegraph.
Not only was there a 46 yr old man killed in the accident with the "P" plate driver I referred to was involved in, but there were also three other people that had severe injuries.
A speed camera allows the RTA to send a demand for money to the owner of the speeding number plate.
Speed cameras catch the unwary drivers passing through who don't know the speed camera is there, who don't notice the speed camera signs because they are looking at the road.
The habitual speeders use sat/navs to warn them to slow down at a certain spot.
To catch these anti-social morons you need real Police in UNMARKED cars.
Police in cars can do a lot more than detect speeding, they are the eyes and ears of the community and while on patrol will detect all sorts of anti-social behaviour.
Fixed speed cameras just sit there gouging money from average drivers.
But then speed cameras don't need to be trained, supplied with uniforms, equipment, and vehicles, nor do speed cameras take holidays, sickdays, maternity leave, or have superanuation.
Speed cameras make money,.... real police cost money.
That's why there are more speed cameras and why there has been a drop in Highway patrol numbers.
This was in The Sunday Telegraph 6/1/08

Was this alledged speeding driver caught by a fixed speed camera?
By all means leave the cameras at Beverly Hills but put up more 60 signs and the extra flashing lights at Edgbaston St.
The Sutherland Shire will today see the article about the Beverly Hill speed camera nonsense in the Leader.
The response from drivers after the article came out last week in the St george edition of the Leader, hasn't been overwhelming.
My idea of having average good drivers show their displeasure in being treated like dummies by the RTA won't work without numbers.
I have emailed the roads minister Mr Roozendaal again last week about the fact that there is still no extra flashing light unit for Southbound drivers on King Georges rd and drivers still don't have enough 60 kl/ph signs at this zone.

I didn't recieve any sort of reply untill after I emailed a letter to the Telegraph and two working days later presto a letter came.
MY EMAIL AND THE REPLY FROM THE MINISTERS OFFICE is back one page.
Unless there is a large number of like minded drivers prepared to stand up and be counted, any protest at Beverly Hills won't work.
Failing that with help from the people willing to help already signed on, I'm prepared to park my van, with the SPEED CAMERA 100 MTRS sign at Beverly Hills day and night if necessary, (to help the RTA slow the cars down in the interest of road safety) till there's a bit of common sense at Beverly Hills.

There has been, by looking at the web statistics, quite a large number of people that have clicked on for a look, some have emailed aggreement and TWO has offered to shoulder a sign.
Not much people power as yet.
Could be a that any of the 30,000 caught at Beverly Hills living in the St George area don't read the leader, or is it a case of "they", meaning someone else, will do it?
Unless there are significant numbers, any protest will be pointless and drivers will continue to be shafted, and not only at Beverly Hills.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
This was in the paper Sept 27/07

Last paragraph says
"the plan for unseen mobile cameras has been abandoned in favour of "high visibility" fixed speed cameras.
Because one of the biggest selling thing at the moment is in-car GPS sat /nav units that also warn of fixed speed cameras, drivers can slow down momentarily at the right spot and then speed up again.
I guarantee as fixed speed camera revenue goes down because of these gadgets, the "abandoned plan" for "unseen mobile speed cameras" will be changed in the "interest of road safety".
In England they have private firms contracted to operate vans with speed cameras that openly boast that they, "catch dads going to work in the morning and mums picking up the kids in the afternoon."
Speed cameras have their place but use them to bludgeon average drivers as at Beverly Hills is not the way to go
There needs to be more Highway patrol police in unmarked cars to catch the REAL criminals not more cameras.
There are lots of websites about speed cameras, here's a comprehensive one:
http://www.policespeedcameras.info/top_40.html
Real police can detect a range of offences, all speed cameras do is enable a fine to be sent to the owner of a "speeding" number plate demanding money.
This article was in the St George and Sutherland Shire Leader on 3/1/08

Legally it seems that at Beverly Hills the RTA is using the "Default speed", rule. ( RTA User's handbook, page 52 )to counter any drivers claim of lack of speed limit signs

So don't put up adequate signage, invoke the old default rule trick and sit back and count the cash all under the guise of road safety, and while doing so take away the licence of not criminals, but hard working ordinary people with families, jobs and bills.
What I want to do is get as many drivers who have been unfairly caught out at Beverly Hills, to hold up a RTA style 60 sign at a suitable time to show the RTA and Road minister Mr Roozendaal through the media, that that this is not the way to treat ordinary decent people.
You'll hear the line that the speed cameras are "for the childrens' safety"
I can accept that if the cameras were set only for school zone time, and there are Flashing lights, but how many children walk the streets of Beverly Hills at 2.00 am.
If you feel the same, hit the comment button at bottom of the page and tell me.
There's no catch I'm not after your money, I just want common sense, fair treatment of average drivers.
It will be difficult to get the mainstream media interested unless there are large numbers of concerned citizens involved, or if there is blood, death, buses overturned and distruction, we'll have to rely on large numbers to attract the road ministers attention.
Brent emailed me and said that "new " cameras heading South had been installed.
To check I drove out this morning and no, they are the same, but maybe Brent saw someone straightening the camera "flash" back into a reasonable and working position, as some one had been using the flash unit to do chin ups and bent it out of shape.

It is working now because a small red car cruised past at 5.45am on this empty 3 lane divided ring road and the "flash" went off.
At 6 am a RTA ute pulled into the car park near me and when a colleague arrived shortly after, one monitered the control box near the camera whilst the other drove the ute repeatedly past the camera sensors to make sure (I assume)it was accurate.
I suppose if it reads 40 on the ute (as in photo) and in the control box it's OK

They also did this for the 60 speed limit.
There is still no 60 sign on King Georges road between Stoney Creek rd and the camera heading North, and no extra school zone flasing light unit at Edgbaston st heading South.
At least when school starts later this month the camera is calibrated.
Mind you if you are caught by the school zone camera heading South just write in and explain that you didn't see any speed camera sign before you entered the school zone from Fredrick st.

This sign, a legal requirement before a speed camera has been like this for months.
This of course can only be used in a defence if you actually came out of Fredrick st.
I am emailing Mr Roozendaal this morning to mention again the need to have a flashing light unit installed at Edgbaston st before the new school year starts to help drivers, and for the safety of the school children.
