Dear Minister Borger

The reason I emailed Mr Roozendaal 4 times (four times was because I can be quite persistant as shown in my category "State Election 2007" or "RailCorp waste")
I personally handed Road Minister Mr Dally a copy of an email I had sent him, and have emailed the new Roads Minister Mr Borger saying it would be in the interest of childrens's safety and a help to drivers to add flashing lights to this school zone sign at Beverly Hills.

There is going to be a bit of money coming in once the six "white" mobile speed camera vans finish the one month warning period and start fining speeding drivers.

Maybe there'll be enough revenue to get an extra set of flashing lights at the Beverly Hills school zone going South, opposite Edgbaston st, because drivers that stop at the lights at Morgan st don't realize/forget it's schoolzone time and waiting for them down the slope hidden behind a pole, is the camera.

As I said in my letter to the Telegraph below "speed cameras have their place in road safety" but the problem with school zones is that drivers need to know WHEN it's school zone time and flashing lights are the answer.
Then if you still speed and get caught tough luck.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxTTelegraph August 6 2009 the 4 column headed letter

This letter I sent into the Telegraph after being ignored by Mr Roozendaal/office

The reply said they'd "look into it," and nothing has changed at Beverly Hills

..........................................................................

School zone at King Georges rd Beverly hills

I spent a fortnight of school zone time at Beverly hills in my santa suit, with my 40 sign, and signs on van to draw attention to fact there was a need of an extra set of flashing lights at Edgebaston st.

I had predicted trouble on 25 July '07 when I saw the speed cameras being installed and rang a reporter at the St George and Sutherland Shire Leader.

I suggested to him that as an investigative reporter, he could ask the RTA why there wasn't a extra set of flashing lights (as there is on the other side of the road) going South, at Beverly Hills

Nothing happened and the camera installation was finished and they were switched on.

I saw this article in the paper, (by the same reporter), and sadly as the leaders article shows, my concern made sense.

The RTA spokes person says that a repeater (school zone) sign was installed at Edgebaston St.

That same sign (above) is the one that I wrote to the roads minister about on 3/9/07 and suggested to him that this sign, needed flashing lights.

Any long school zones should have repeater lights if there are side streets coming into the zone.

How many other drivers have been caught out at this school zone and are about to loose their licence?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I e-mailed this to the St George and Sutherland Shire Leader for the letters page.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear sir,
I question the need at all, for there to be a school zone along the whole length of the shopping strip at King Georges Rd Beverly hills.
("No warning on school zone"Leader 6/9/07)
With a fence and planter boxes, this area is virtually a divided road and with an over bridge, and traffic lights along it's length, there are ample places for pedestrians to cross safely.
Granted there is a school at both ends of the school zone, but why not have a zone at the school, not a single one over a kilometer long.

Last Monday 3rd Sept. in the morning school zone time, I counted the South speed camera light flash 34 times in one hour, as cars went past allegedly exceeding the 40 kmh limit.
Why would drivers do this, unless they were unaware that they were still in a school zone, yet nowhere near a school.

The RTA have put up a small "repeater " school zone sign at Egdbaston st, but it needs to be one with flashing lights.
On Tues 4 th Sept, I e-mailed Mr Roozendaal the roads minister requesting that this be done, I have not as yet, had any response.

Hans Stephens
---------------------------------------------------------------------
adding as a postscript to the e-mail
-------------------------------------------------------------------
I would love to have response by people who have been booked, and maybe help with getting the tickets looked at.
Can my web site name www.schoolzonesanta.com be added to my letter?
Regards Hans
...................................................................

I emailed the Roads Minister Mr Eric Roozendaal, as one phone call from him would get action that was needed, after all he was the Transport Minister and in charge.

Subject: school zone

Dear Minister,
I would like to bring to your attention a situation at a school zone on King Georges rd. Beverly hills.
There are flashing lights at this zone and now also a new set of speed cameras, but a lot of drivers don't realize that the whole shopping strip is a school zone.
Because it's such a long zone, (.9 klm) can a second warning light unit be added to the school zone sign that's half way, heading South towards Hurstville, similar to the one already on the other side of the road.

Without going on in detail here, my concern about this school zone is explained, with photos, on my web site www.schoolzonesanta.com

Thank you for your time

Regards Hans Stephens

No reply, so I rang, and was told that I hadn't added an address
So I wrote again with full address and phone number.

Dear sir.
As the situation at the Beverly Hills school zone is only getting worse could you please have a look at the last couple of pages on www.schoolzonesanta.com

Thank you
Hans Stephens

This is the page on the day I sent the E-mail.

What is needed at King Georges and Edgbaston Beverly Hills is get one of these flashing light units

and put it where this school zone sign is on the right

and I would say that would help with the school zone "speeding" for drivers heading south.

Drivers now just cruise down this divided road after traffic lights change at Morgan st forgetting all about the school zone.

JUST IMAGINE THE NUMBER OF DRIVER THAT WILL BE CAUGHT WHEN THEY TAKE AWAY THE LARGE TRAILER MOUNTED WARNING SIGNS

There need to be more 60 signs at Beverly Hills, especially one between Stoney Creek rd and the North bound camera.
It would be helpful for drivers and road safety that "60 ahead" signs be installed on either end of the zone, because it's 70 along most of King Georges rd and if an extra set of flashing lights had been installed at Edgbaston steet, I don't think the RTA and ultimately, Mr Roozendaal would have this problem.

No reply, so I tried again.

border="0" alt="" />

I helped the children by slowing down traffic.

These reliable cheap flashing lights that were installed by Mr Peter Olsen at 4 schools, lights that are cheap in price, (not quality and reliability.0

These flashing lights would be a boon for drivers and children's safety at school zones.

But as it's not made by a preferred (read expensive) contractor, will the RTA ever use them?

Subject: Beverly Hiills School zone.

Dear Minister,

In July last year the RTA installed variable speed cameras at a school zone on King Georges rd Beverly Hills.

Even before the cameras were switched on I could see that because of the length of the school zone and many side streets entering it, that there would be carnage when they were activated, even though flashing lights are at both ends on King Georges Rd.

After an article in the local paper featuring a group of sad looking motorists holding up tickets I emailed the then roads minister Mr Roozendaal suggesting an extra set of flashing lights opposite Edgbason st to help South bound motorists (and make it safer for children, the whole idea for having school zones)

After 4 unanswered emails, I wrote to the Telegraph and then "coincidentally" an unhelpful reply came from Mr Roozendaal's office two days later.
30,000 infringements in the first three months would indicate that perhaps that more signage would be helpful.

To more easily illustrate the problem at Beverly Hills, I've brought forward the relevant page on my website

www.schoolzonesanta.com

Please have a look

We need road rule and to enforce them, but hammering average, unaware drivers is not the way to go.

More sixty signs and that extra flashing light unit at Beverly Hills, would go a long way in the public relations department.

Thank you for your time.
All the best in handling, what is a difficult portfolio.

Yours faithfully

I await a reply from Mr Boger's office

To be continued ................

SCHOOL ZONE SANTA .....A brief History
I started SZS in 2004 when it was clear that something was wrong at the school zone at Kogarah with it's two speed cameras, when 49,500 drivers were booked in one year, (2003/2004)and paid $6.5 million.

Flashing lights weren't an option it seems, even though those 49,500 speeding drivers were putting children's lives at risk.

When then Roads Minister Costa (after media pressure) said he'd "move the speed cameras" at Kogarah, I emailed him as said he would be blamed for moving them, if a child was then run down, and that he could install ten cameras at Kogarah, but to also put flashing lights there too.

(A form reply came six months later from the office of the next road minister Mr Tripodi.)
.................................................................................................................................................,

So school zone santa has be going since and as my effort in the 2007 State election and in other categories shows, I can be quite pesistant.

Dear Mr O'farrell,
There has been a lot of angst caused by the Sydney City Council's idea that roads need to be dug up to provide dedicated bike paths for the small number of people who prefer to cycle, thus causing even more traffic headaches for motorists.
The Premier seems to be in favour of this plan, and has be seen on her pushbike although still spending a reported $100,000 on car parking in the city.
What is your opinion on the way Mayor Clover Moore is implementing this plan which is opposed by the majority, even by cyclists because of safety concerns by the way sections are designed and constructed?

Dear Mr O'farrell,
I repeat the email below I sent earlier, having recieved no reply as yet.
Today I heard you speaking about security at railway stations.
RailCorp does use CCTV cameras, as can been seen at the staff carpark at the Cronulla Railway Station. 12 cameras for a 30 space car park that's behind a high steel security fence, and there are never more than 8 cars in there.
On mywebsite www.schoolzonesanta.com under the category "RailCorp waste" you can see photos of the cameras, and my highlighting of this waste of resorces, and will continue to untill most of the cameras are removed

All the best in the first of the by-elections.

Double demerit misery

I went to the Beverly Hills school zone this morning which is
start of the Easter break double demerits for certain traffic offences.

Between 8.00am and 9.30 am I counted the speed camera flash (South bound) go off 9 times.

8.10..... lane 3
8.25 .... lane 3
8.47..... lane3
9.12..... lane 3
9.12 .....middle lane
9.15..... lane 1
9.15 .....lane 3
9.17...... middle lane (came in from lane 3)

Times maybe a bit out, because I was focused on cars "speeding" and then watching for the flash.

So these poor speeding drivers are up for 8 points.

An April fool's joke?

I say poor, because looking at their faces as they pass by I can see they have no idea that they are in a school zone, let alone that they could now very well loose their license.

I email Mr Roozendaal 4 times to put flashing lights opposite Edgbaston st. see Beverly hills category.

I emailed the now Police Minister (then Roads Minister) Micheal Daly for the extra flashing light set, no reply, so I handed him a copy of the same email, he read it and said "I can't do anything about that" and HE IS (was at the time) THE ROADS MINISTER !!!
Who's the boss?

Cars coming down King Georges rd stop at the Morgan st lights and when the lights change it's easy to forget it's a school zone when there are 3 empty lanes of divided rd stretch into the distance.

(sorry about the photo quality I uploaded this in a hurry)

Morgan St lights

Put flashing lights on the centre sign and all the drivers waiting at those lights will see it and it's safer for the children and fairer for the drivers.

Centre sign that needs lights

If drivers miss this sign don't realise it's a school zone it's a highway to hell before them

The speed camera is behind a post near the bus.

Take the light set from Blakehurst (fig 3) which flashes at UFOs at the moment or the one flashing the Chinese Restaurant , (because of the bend in the highway) because it's useless where it is.

This next photo is taken from the steps of the restaurant.

I'll email the latest road's minister Mr David Campbell about this again.

................................................................

I rang 2GB's drive time this afternoon, but I'm not much good getting my point across but if anyone did click on when I mentioned this website Hullo.

Maybe I need to get acting lessons.

Priority?

"Last Thursday a 22-year-old woman was attacked just two minutes from Waverley police station.
Police arrived almost an hour later. They told her her case had been given the wrong response category."

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/triple-0-go-slow-delays-mean-crime-time-in-sydney/story-e6freuy9-1225841558861

And an other example:

"A FAMILY with two young children spent two hours waiting for police by the side of the road after apprehending a boy who hurled a rock through the windscreen of their car, only to be told officers were too busy to respond. "

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/familys-wasted-wait-for-justice/story-e6freuy9-1225842084888

Where were the Police?

Well this morning there were two gainfully employed at the Kogarah Regent st. cab rank checking out the Taxis.

The driver of one taxi in pristine condition, with sunroof and shiny paintwork, a beautiful vehicle, not at all like the managed cabs I drove for ten years, was polite and courteous during all the seat-belt tugging, boot, interior and under bonnet inspection.

After thoroughly going over her Taxi and talking to the driver when he was finished, the driver obviously annoyed, slammed shut the two passenger doors and bonnet and hopped into her car.

The driver told me she had been booked for not ticking a couple of boxes on the back of her day sheet.

If she had forgotten to tick a box or two (which she told me wasn't necessary anyway) wouldn't a polite reminder have been sufficient?

It's hard enough to make a living driving a cab, without this sort of petty nonsense.

We need the Police to enforce regulations, but sometimes a gentle warning would be sufficient.

An "official police warning" is all the go for young graffiti vandals.

One example;

http://www.theleader.com.au/news/local/news/general/graffiti-teen-arrested/1660635.aspx

9 young graffiti vandals have been caught in the Sutherland Shire recently and all were given Police cautions and sent home.

This mural was painted on the shop wall last year and I commented about it on the "Graffiti" category.

Today I received an email from one of the "crew" who painted it.

He/she (the email was anonymous) said it took 8 hours to complete and they paid for the paint themselves.

It made no difference to temperature in the house.

Down-lights began malfunctioning

They insulation installer came back, and an electrician (the customer called) said the lights were now clear, but the lights still to go off and on.
The downlight transformers must have overheated initially and been damaged.

Alex a carpet cleaner friend had his house done , he had to call installers back after they had "forgotten" to do an area.

Once again no obvious difference in temperature in house

FREE ROOF INSULATION

Insulation installers are coming out of the woodwork (from lawn mowing contractors to men from hire a hubby, cashing in on a Federal Government "green" initiative worth $2.7 billion to put pink batts in the roof of Australian homes.

But along with good tradesmen, come the shonks and rip off merchants.

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/nsw-act/insulation-batts-blamed-for-several-fires-across-nsw/story-e6freuzi-1225777204878

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/victoria/companies-are-rorting-the-federal-governments-insulation-scheme/story-e6frf7kx-1225824846920

Last year 100 was the figure given of deregistered companies given that were deregistered.

were any monies returned by rorting companies?

The promised threat of "naming and shaming" of companies has resulted in this meager list.

http://www.environment.gov.au/energyefficiency/insulation/homeowners/pubs/deregistered-installers.pdf

Imagine if there was a list of all 100 companies in the paper and homeowners that dealt with theis lot all checked their roof space and demanded the work to redone.

After an article with a simiar theme was in yesterday's Daily Telegraph

I sent an email to the letter's page which was printed this morning

Metal insulation banned

THERE are fears thousands of households may have been fitted with potentially deadly roof insulation under a federal government scheme.
Environment Minister Peter Garrett banned the use of metal foil insulation in the $3.7 billion rebate scheme, citing safety reasons.

Four workers have died installing the insulation, three of them being electrocuted.

TOWER OF HOPE

I went to the Tower of hope rally at Parliament House Canberra Feb 2.

A great turnout of people who support the stand that Peter Spencer had made for unfair treatment by Governments.

Farmers from around the country marched to Parliament House to protest.

Peter Spencer ends hunger strike on day 52

.

Peter Spencer has ended his hunger strike he started to highlight the Kyoto land use stealing by the Government.

The ABC has mentioned this fact on their website and 7.00 pm News Broadcast

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/01/13/2791513.htm

Now let's hope that other farmers affected by the same regulations get behind Peter when Parliament Commences on Feb 2.
Thousands or city folk and hundreds of farmers on their tractors might send a message that enough is enough

Radio 2GB brought the good news this morning, and SKYNEWS also high lighted Peters coming down from his perch
Both the Daily Telegraph and The Sydney Morning Herald didn't think it was a story on their websites.

Plenty of space always for spaced out "celebrities." though.

Peter Spencer Day 50

There is to be a concerted effort tomorrow on the 50th day of farmer Peter Spencer's hunger strike to get his desperate plight the attention it's needed all along.
Radio 2GB is going to have a Peter Spencer day and with a bit of listener effort the rest of the media should get on board.

I emailed the letter's page last week but this letter didn't make the cut, nor any other Peter Spencer letter that day and no mention anwhere in that day's edition of Peter and his hunger strike.

Subject: Peter spencer and the good Samaritan Mr Rudd

Hi,
Peter Spencer is now in the 46th day of his hunger strike. ("Dying for the land" DT Jan 7)
Mr Rudd through his office told him to come down from his tower, and take your case to court.
He's tried going to court, and taxpayer funded lawyers (at what cost?) have stymied 200 or so attempts to get the case heard.
As Mr Rudd is on holiday, no doubt worn out from his saving the world in Copenhagen, perhaps deputy PM Ms Gillard who is mostly in charge anyway, can have a chat to Peter, seeing Kevin who once lived on a farm, won't come down from his ivory tower and show some compassion.
Even perhaps he or she going unannounced and assuring Peter that his case will get a fair hearing, all that he has ever wanted
It appears that Mr Rudd has an interest in books, maybe next Sunday before he comes out of church for his usual photo opportunity, he picks up a Bible and reads the chapter on the good Samaritan.
This is a parable about so called leaders in the community, looking the other way and ignoring the plight of a man who was beaten and robbed.
If only Peter was gay, a refugee, from a religious minority, or an actress who's just had a baby..........

Regards
Hans Stephens

Subject: When is spam spam

Dear sir,
A real estate company is in trouble for allegedly sending out spam emails ( "Slammed over spam" DT 9 Jan)
I emailed the Opposition Leader Tony Abbott about the ongoing hunger strike by farmer Peter Spencer.
No reply mentioning my concerns about Peter, but since then in my inbox along with the Viagra ads, I have had 3 other emails from Mr Abbott's office.
The first was list of how I could apply for grants, but not being indigenous that disqualified me from most of the list, the second email was a "Tony Abbott's Blog Report" and the third said that Tony had been on the "7.30 REPORT"
I suggest the Tony's staff actually read emails, and not just push the reply button after inserting unsolicited content.
Incidentally I'm still waiting any sort of reply from my 3 emails to Tony in 2008, about my concerns about the AMI sex aid ads on daytime radio.
I wasn't complaining about a pothole in the road, I just think that adult ads should be on radio at adult times.
By the way I usually vote Liberal.

Regards
Hans Stephens

Hunger strike DAY 43

Peter Spencer supporters are off to Canberra to protest, not being able to go I did park a sign on the Princes Highway at Sylvania to at least make Sydney bound drivers think and hopefully read up on Peter's case.

Not much sympathy for Peter Spencer at Sylvania

"Move your sign and shit, the Police have been called"

next link explains what happened this morning after I put up my signs

http://schoolzonesanta.com/index.php/2005/08/18/g_p_s_1

And to a power pole a bit further down the road

A bit further

and a last one, a little bit of an irreverent one

I was told by someone from a nearby business to "get your sign and your shit out of here."

I didn't

Here I am in a public parking bay that I've used before to attract attention, see

see http://schoolzonesanta.com/index.php/2007/03/16/sample_more_to_come

and all I'm trying to do is help a bloke in trouble by displaying a sign,

BOY IF I HAD THE TIME AND MONEY AND MY LIFE PARTNER SHARED MY ENTHUSIASM I'D HELP TO MAKE SURE THAT PETER SPENCER'S NAME WON'T GO AWAY AS MR RUDD AND MR ABBOTT HOPES IT WILL

Though my wife has every reason to be wary of my way of helping people... see
